It is not yet known whether the innovative Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX electric car will reach the assembly line or remain a concept. However, the German carmaker has confirmed that it will enter the market with its own solar panel technology. Speaking about this during the presentation of the Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX concept, Mercedes-Benz CTO Marcus Schaefer said that owners of future electric vehicles of this brand will be able to order solar roofs, which will help expand the range of products offered.
The company claims that the solar panels integrated in the roof will increase mileage by up to 25 kilometers per day. The company’s own technology is unique in that the energy extracted from the sun is accumulated in a separate lithium-iron-phosphate battery, which provides power to air conditioning and ventilation systems, infotainment system, lighting and other auxiliary systems of the car. This reduces the load on the high voltage traction battery and increases mileage without recharging.
“This way, customers will have a choice in the future: glass or sun roofs, which are extremely aesthetically pleasing and also provide extra battery power,” says Schaefer. “We are working with the German research and development institute Fraunhofer, which has developed a very efficient solar roof that we will start installing on production vehicles probably from 2024. Keep in mind that there are already several production vehicles on the market with standard solar roofs, such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5.
