Solar panels increasingly fail when the sun shines

Grid operator Fluvius has already received 2,397 complaints about failing solar panels this year. That is 65 percent more than in the same period last year.

The problem mainly arises in areas where many installations are located together or where the electricity has to travel longer distances over the grid. As a result, in sunny weather, the excess electricity produced cannot be processed properly everywhere and the installations fail, as a kind of safety. That also means less electricity generated for the owners.

Flemish ombudsman Bart Weekers believes that the victims should receive compensation, but Flemish energy minister Zuhal Demir (N-VA) calls this “symptom control” and prefers a long-term solution.

In Limburg, Fluvius is investing in eighteen places in the grid this year and next. In addition, about thirty files have been started up for the installation of new distribution booths.
