“Solar Octagons” to prevent skin cancer

Lima.- Peru is one of the countries with the highest solar radiation in the world, reaching historical rates of up to 20 points, a level considered “extreme”, which endangers the health of all Peruvians. Reason why the increase in cases of skin cancer is projected, becoming one of the most aggressive and deadly types of cancer

In this context, with the support of Rimac Seguros and Yanbal, the League Against Cancer launches its campaign: “Solar Octagons”, focused on alerting the population about those areas, scenarios and / or schedules that are high in solar radiation, to thus raise awareness and motivate the correct skin protection this summer. The idea arises due to the adoption of octagons as a symbol of warnings that allow consumers to identify if a product is “High in sugar”, “saturated fat”, “sodium”, etc. providing an alert for the consumption of said foods.

At the virtual launch of the campaign was present Adolfo Dammert, president of the League Against Cancer, who after his participation in the event added: “Skin cancer is a disease that we can prevent from today in a practical way, protecting ourselves. Only 15% of Peruvian households purchase sun protection products, that is to say, out of every 10 households, only 1.5 are protected against these harmful effects. Many times we are not aware that the damage we receive today may not be seen today but we can pay the consequences later. Let’s enjoy the sun protected! ”.

Also participating were Damary Milla, general manager of the institution, Carlos Salazar, oncologist specializing in head, neck and skin; Engineer Orlando Ccora, specialist in Radiation UC, from Senamhi and Antonia del Solar, campaign ambassador, all united to encourage sun protection.

During the campaign, mobile units of the institution will be launched that will visit points of high solar exposure in Lima and Callao, to carry out free skin cancer screenings to the population at risk and also present a preventive fair to raise awareness of the subject, planning to distribute 50 thousand sachets of sunscreen thanks to the support of Yanbal. The January tour will start in Huayna Capac Park (Friday 7 and Saturday 8 January), later in Playa Sombrillas (Friday 14 and Saturday 15 January), then in Parque La pera (Friday 21 and Saturday 22) and finally in the Plaza de Armas La Punta (Friday 28 and Saturday 29 January).

This activity will also have a presence in high radiation provinces in the interior of the country such as Moquegua and Piura (January 12), Cusco (January 20), Arequipa (January 25) and in Ica (January 26).
