Solar energy can cover close to half of the US needs by 2050 – E24

By the middle of the century, solar energy could cover 45 percent of the United States’ energy needs, according to a study by US authorities.

The study was published by the Department of Energy in Washington on Wednesday. Today, the share of solar energy in the United States is only 3 percent. The sharp increase presupposes a quadrupling of the annual growth in the development.

Large public investments will be needed, in addition to policy measures to remove incentives to develop energy sources that cause climate emissions.

If that happens, solar energy could account for 40 percent of the energy supply in 2035 and 45 percent from 2050.

“The study sheds light on the fact that solar energy, which is the cheapest and fastest growing clean energy source, can produce enough electricity to supply all homes in the United States by 2035,” said Energy Minister Jennifer Granholm.
