The floods and landslides occur after the province was hit by heavy rainfall.
– Until late Tuesday night, our two morgues had received something close to 253 dead, says the regional health director Nomagugu Simelane-zulu to the TV station eNCA.
This is a sharp increase from the previous official figure of 59 dead.
Many have lost their homes and the heavy water masses have led to major damage to the infrastructure in the city of Durban.
Mmeli Sokhela is among several – who have lost their loved ones. He lost three children and a stepson after a church collapsed on their house.

In some places the water is so deep that only the top of the traffic lights protrudes where the road goes. Landslides have also led to canceled trains.
