Sofia’s budget is, to put it mildly, unsocial. The budget is always at the root of the problems – its structure, to what extent sufficient funds are allocated for public services – kindergartens and nurseries, hospices, Vanya Grigorova, the mayoral candidate of the “Left” Party, said in the studio of “Oshte ot dijena” on BNT.
According to her, Sofia’s budget must be reformed to meet the needs of Sofia residents. This year’s budget needs to be supported, but the more important budget is the 2024 budget.
Regarding the “holes” in the urban transport budget, Grigorova commented that there is no country where it is not subsidized:
“What needs to be done are additional investments, so that additional buses, trolleybuses, trams are purchased to meet the needs of the capital’s residents. But if we do not pay attention to those employed in urban transport, there will be no one to drive. Increase wages, drastically improve working conditions, so that these people are motivated to work to their full potential and not leave.”
According to Grigorova, Sofia’s budget can be increased through additional subsidies, as she gave an example of cities in Europe where public transport is completely free and added that this measure would have both a social and environmental effect.
“Until we create the conditions, good enough public transport, there is no way people will leave their cars. About 80,000 cars enter the capital every day. If we have good enough public transport, these people will not drive their cars and wonder where to park .”
According to her, when a person wants to achieve something, he can use both trade union mechanisms and political ones:
“As of today, I am no longer an employee of KT “Support”. On the initiative of the president Dimitar Manolov, we are separating, which does not mean that I am separating from syndicalism, because syndicalism is not a profession, but a cause and a vocation.”
Regarding the idea of ”air corridors” in Sofia, Grigorova specified that she meant to preserve the existing green corridors. Where there are grounds and they are green areas, they must be purchased by the municipality to remain so and to stop redevelopment.
