Sofiane Oumiha Becomes First Frenchman to Win Triple World Boxing Championship

Sofiane Oumiha is in the process of building one of the finest records in French boxing. Silver medalist at the Rio Olympics in 2016, the Habs was crowned amateur boxing world champion for the third time in his career on Saturday in Tashkent in the -60 kg category. By beating the Cuban Erislandy Alvarez Borges (4-1) in the final, Oumiha thus became the first Frenchman to triple title at the world level, after his victories in 2017 and 2021.

“It’s a pride to bring home a third title. It’s the Grail, I’m going into the history of boxing in France, ”reacted Sofiane Oumiha, 28. The Frenchman struggled to find his distance at the start of the fight before regaining his speed and mobility in the second and third rounds.

Oumiha will now participate in the European Games next June in Krakow, a qualifying stage for the Paris Olympics. In Poland, he will fight in -63.5 kg, the -60 kg not being an Olympic category.

“It is a source of pride to have such a champion in our ranks. From now on, he just has to focus on the support to gain power and the means of defense so as not to expose himself in -63.5 kg where it necessarily hits harder than in -60 kg, “said explained Malik Bouziane, national coach in charge of the men’s sector. Oumiha has also embarked on a professional career and has three wins in as many fights.
