Sofia Richie has become a mother for the first time. Now she speaks openly in a podcast about the complications before and after birth.

Sofia Richie (26) became a mother for the first time in May. She marked the birth of her daughter at the time on Instagram as the best day of her life. However, months later, the daughter of musician Lionel Richie (75) opened up in a podcast about how much she struggled in the last weeks of her pregnancy. The last part from the 32nd week onwards scared her, reports the 26-year-old in the new format “She MD”. The podcast is hosted by her gynecologist Dr. Thais Aliabadi and women’s rights activist Mary Alice Haney moderated.

At the start of the episode, Richie explained that she felt like there wasn’t enough discussion about complications that could arise during or after pregnancy. According to the young mother, everything went well in her own pregnancy until the 32nd week, but after that there was a frightening turn.

She was in labor for six weeks

One morning she woke up very tired, tense and with back pain. She didn’t think much of it and believed that it was normal when you were expecting a baby. Nevertheless, she decided to see her doctor, which fortunately was the right decision. Her gynecologist referred her to a specialist to make sure everything was okay.

It turned out that she was already in labor. He was then taken to a hospital in Los Angeles for additional monitoring with infusions. “A few planned hours ended up being a six-day stay,” Richie said in the podcast. “I was really scared.” Premature labor could be caused by various factors such as stress, infections or trauma, her gynecologist added in the interview. But sometimes it happens for no reason.

The 26-year-old continued to report that she was able to return home after six days, but had to remain on strict bed rest. “From then on it was kind of a waiting game.” Her child was finally born in the 38th week and the birth went smoothly. “What she went through was really traumatic. She was in labor for six weeks…it was a long six weeks for her, I think,” Aliabadi said of her famous patient’s pregnancy.

Health problems after childbirth

But after the birth, Richie had further complications. When she came home from the hospital, she “popped up like a balloon.” Her body was very swollen and she didn’t feel well. After some tests it turned out that her blood pressure was extremely high. She suffered from postpartum preeclampsia, a condition that can occur in women after childbirth.
