Sofia Mayor Urgently Addresses Suspension of Simeonovsky Lift – Solutions in Place for Mountain Access

“Like many residents of Sofia, I was surprised that the Simeonovsky lift was not working yesterday and today. And it is not clear when it will work – probably not until the end of February. In the Capital Municipality, we do not have official information from the owner of the lift in order to create the necessary organization in advance of the movement,” Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev wrote on his Facebook profile.

“Today, I ordered the mayor of the Vitosha region to immediately fulfill his obligations under the law and convene a commission to clarify the circumstances of the suspension of the lift, and to notify the Chief Architect of Sofia to take follow-up actions. This is the only thing we we can take into account the fact that the Simeon lift is privately owned.

What we have done for the people of Sofia since yesterday, when the problem arose, until today is:

– Teams of the Municipal Police and Emergency Assistance and Prevention of the municipality undertook the organization of the traffic so that the access to the mountain was normal and there were no problems with the movement of buses from the city transport.

– At the moment, the teams of the Metropolitan Municipality are on the Golden Bridges and on Aleko, and parking is done only on one side of the lane, and in the designated places – on both.

– All stops and end wheels are secured. So children and parents can rest assured that the movement to Vitosha and to the main slopes is ensured.

– Twice as many buses are provided on the key routes in order to compensate for the lack of the Simeon lift and for more tourists to use public transport instead of their cars.

– From today, on all days off until the end of the ski season or until the Simeon lift is restored, the same organization will be in place so that we have relatively normal access to the mountain.

However, such a situation is completely unacceptable for me, and only days after the opening of the ski season on Vitosha. Immediately after the holidays, I will request information from the owner of the facilities so that I can assist in solving the problems,” Terziev also wrote.
