The Sofia City Council is to confirm the names of the Sofia metro stations currently under construction. At their last meeting, the transport committee in the town’s parliament unanimously adopted a report on what their names should be. The proposal for names was made by the head of “Metropolitan” Stoyan Bratoev, and the report was submitted for consideration by city councilors from different organizations.
The six stations of the metro extension from “Orlov Most” to the Military Academy, zk “Geo Milev”, “Slatina” and “District Hospital” will be called as follows: “Sitnyakovo”, “Geo Milev”, “Slatina” , “Shipchenski Prohod”, “Arena Sofia” and “Trakia”. “Thus, the proposed names create a clear reference to where metro stations are located and which neighborhoods they serve. In addition, they are short and easy to reproduce in virtual information,” wrote the importer.
To keep the name “Trakia” for the sixth station from the metro line to the “Trakia” highway, SOS will change the name of the third stop of the future extension after “Hadji Dimitar” to the direction of station railway “Levski”. “The Trakia metro station, which is currently under construction, is located east of Vitinya Street and south of the Gen. Blvd. Vladimir Vazov”. The highway “Hemus”, leading to Mysia, was expected to lead to funny comments in the public space. Vladimir Vazov”, the Transport Commission concluded.
Until the future Trakia station at Tsarigradsko Shose Blvd is matched with an existing city name, SOS will designate the area between Tsarigradsko Shose local lane and Dimitar Mollov Street in Mladost as Square Thrace. One of the entrances to the future metro station.
The Transport Commission also decided that the two new metro stops in “Lyulin” should be named “Tsarica Joanna” because of their location on the route of the same name, and “Struma” because of a connection the metro with AM “Struma”.
Future stop on “Pancho Vladigerov” Blvd and the railway “Metropolitan” suggests that the Sofia-Voluyak line between “Lyulin” and “Obelya” should be named “Pancho Vladigerov”. Initially, NKŽI planned to call it “Obelya M”, but due to the fact that the nearby stop “Obelya” was a few hundred meters from Sofia Municipality, they objected that the similar names could cause confusion cause among passengers.
The Transport Commission has accepted further changes to the names of two of the existing metro stations. In the near future, the stop “Mizia / New Bulgarian University” will be called simply “Mizia”. This is the name of the square above the stop. The reason is that the station is at a great distance from the school (752 m from the entrance) and there are three other public transport bus stops next to it. In addition, the name was long and made it difficult to write on the information plates, the importers said.
Soon Tsar Boris III Boulevard / Krasno Selo metro station will be called just “Krasno Selo” station “Bull. “Bulgaria” will drop “boulevard” and it will be called only “Bulgaria”.
The decisions of the transport commission will be confirmed at a session of the town council, which will probably happen in September.
