Sofía Fernández has started the season in the best way, with a victory in the Mutua Madrid U16 held in Almería and which has given her the pass to compete in the Cadet Master. She is 15 years old, a teenager, and since she was a child she has had an unalterable goal: “Reach the Top 10 in the world.” She utters the same words that appeared a few years ago in this newspaper.
His whole life is tennis; He has even adapted his studies, currently fourth in ESO, to carry them out electronically through Cidead, due to his numerous trips throughout Spain to compete in different tournaments.
He began the campaign with a trip to Almería for Mutua Madrid where “the first two rounds were easy.” Then, on Friday afternoon it rained, so “they had to change the matches to a hard court on Saturday, which made it a little harder for me to adapt.” Given this, he acknowledges that “the semifinals were a little more complicated for me, but in the final I played much better.”
It should be noted that Sofía Fernández is located among the 50 absolute best tennis players in Spain, where Sara Sorribes and Paula Badosa are found, a milestone in Talavera and the region “and I would dare say that in Castilla-La Mancha,” says her coach. , Bene Tapetado.
Sofía, for her part, considers her progression palpable, given that “I have improved a lot in 2023 and I think 2024 is going to be a good year.” She explains that she has perfected the serve, while “my strong point is the forehand and I have to improve the return and the backhand.” And the goal for this year that she has just started is “to get into the ITF world and get the best ranking.”
His most immediate commitment will be an ITF Tournament in Portugal on February 18. Next week she will face the Madrid Championship of the cadet category and in May the Master where her main opponent will be Marta Picó from Alicante.
His idol continues to be Roger Federer, as well as Dominic Thiemy and “now I really like Alcaraz because he is very complete and has a lot of fun playing.”
Regarding his preferred surface to play on, “I am good at both clay and hard courts, although lately I prefer the latter.” His coach explains that “cement is much more demanding because you have to make the gestures faster.”
Tapetado considers that “the best thing about Sofía since she was little is that she is a very complete tennis player and has had no weak points.”
At the moment his preparation, of course, is very exhaustive: “He trains twice a week in Madrid with the Federation, then he is with us on the weekend.” Because there is a fact and that is that «Sofia demands that she be well 12 months of the year; “There are no gaps.”
Along with this, it should be noted that the tennis player now has a dietician because all the details of her preparation must be taken care of as much as possible.
Tapetado also wants to highlight the support that the athlete has from her family: “The respect she has had for her decision because she was the one who said she wanted to dedicate herself to this and her parents, as well as her grandfather, have always defended her.”
Travel, sporting success and studies. It seems idyllic, but “it is not easy to combine everything,” as Sofía Fernández herself admits. But, of course, her tenacity will lead her to the goals she sets for herself.
