In 2003, Sofia Essaïdi became known to the general public by participating in the show Star Academy. The young woman’s goal was to go as far as possible in order to be able to embark on a musical career. Over the weeks, Sofia Essaïdi learned a lot of things and it was during the semi-final that she was eliminated. After a solo album, the artist, now 39, suddenly ended her career. “I was too perfectionist, too in control, too stressed and… unhappy”, she began, later specifying: “I failed to find my place as a solo singer, to impose my ideas, to fit into the mould, I was looking in vain for a pygmalion…”. Aged 19 when she participated, Sofia Essaïdi believes that she was too young to assert herself. “I was a kid…known before I knew myself. It was a mad whirlwind”, she said, later adding: “I was not surrounded by people who suited me, unlike my acting career which began”.

Sofia Essaïdi hoped to embark on a musical career at the end of the Star Academy. However, the singer has bad memories of this participation. In the columns of Tele-LeisureTuesday, August 25, 2023, she revealed that she had fallen into “a depressive state”providing further details. “I did not succeed at that time to impose myself, to make the music I wanted, because I was a product. The substance is the artist, the form is the product”, she said, explaining that she only understood it after several years. “Today, with hindsight and maturity, I understand it. I arrived in a system that favors efficiency more than authenticity and that, I do not question. Except that it was extremely painful to live because I had things to defend. I felt that I had inner and authentic things to deliver, but nobody was interested”, regretted Sofia Essaïdi. The artist did not leave the art world, since she turned to cinema and also took part in several series. However, the actress, who made shocking secrets about her depression, affirms her desire to return to her first passion. “I really want to come back. I have a very fulfilling life as an actress, I have a lot of projects, but music is visceral to me“, she concluded.
