Sofia Citizens Riot Against Congestion of Streets Due to Confiscated Cars from Drunk and Drugged Drivers

People in Sofia are about to riot against the congestion of streets around police stations with confiscated cars. The problem is getting worse with each passing day after the rule came into effect to impound cars from those caught driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Citizens have already signaled before bTVthat such cars have blocked an entire street – “Knyaz Boris I” Street, around the Second Police Station in the capital.

Dozens of cars confiscated by law enforcement occupy parking spaces in the “Green Zone”. Although the people in the neighborhood pay a subscription for their cars – BGN 120 per month, there are not enough parking spaces.

Their patience runs out when a disabled car is also occupied by a confiscated car. “The vehicle in question was moved yesterday afternoon when we called the TV station. Surprisingly, they took an adequate decision and even suggested that we do a report on the situation in the neighborhood, which is appalling. The street is full of about 40-45 unregistered cars, as well as about 20 official cars of the district office,” claims Krasimir Tsenev.

Already on the second day after the introduction of amendments to the Penal Code, which allow the impoundment of cars of drivers caught with alcohol or drugs, the police boasted of a series of such cases.

He is adamant that unregistered cars are parked in places that people pay for. And he adds that this damages the capital by about BGN 400 per day, which is BGN 10,000 per month.

“My mother is 85 years old, with a broken pelvis. I wanted to take her out yesterday when the weather was nice. When I arrived, it turned out that a car without a license plate was parked in the disabled space, which broke the glass of my patience. I tried to get in touch with the police, but I hit a rock,” said Tsenev.

In position, the SDVR apologizes to the affected people and promises that a parking lot for seized cars is being built outside the central city area, but this would take technological time.

In 5 months, the Ministry of Internal Affairs has already confiscated 1,500 cars of drunk and drugged people, of which nearly 200 cars have already been permanently confiscated by court decisions. According to the Ministry of the Interior, the measure played its preventive role and there were fewer people caught on the road.

In fact, problems with traffic jams with impounded or impounded cars are starting to become even more serious at other police stations, especially those that are downtown. Things are getting worse with mass operations against drugged and drunk drivers. Just a few days ago, the Ministry of Internal Affairs boasted that in 5 months it had already confiscated 1,500 cars, of which nearly 200 cars had already been permanently confiscated by court decisions. In all these cases, the cars are either standing as material evidence awaiting court, or they are waiting for auctions to be sold publicly by the NRA.
