Sofia Among 9 Regions Under Orange Snowfall Alert

Winter Storm Warning Issued for Parts of Eastern Europe

A significant winter storm⁣ is⁣ expected to impact parts ‌of Eastern ⁣Europe on December 25th, prompting weather alerts from the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH).

The NIMH has issued ‌an orange ⁢alert—its second-highest warning level—for heavy snow and rain in nine regions: Vratsa, Gabrovo, Lovech, Montana, Pleven, Ruse, Smolyan, Sofia region, and Targovishte. Thes areas should brace for potentially disruptive weather ‍conditions.

A less severe, yellow alert, is in effect for sixteen additional districts, warning of significant rain and snow. Eastern regions are also under‍ a yellow alert for ⁣high winds and ​rain.

According to the NIMH forecast, the⁤ next 24 hours will see a dramatic shift in ⁢weather⁣ patterns. A strong north-northeast wind ⁣will usher in​ a cold ⁣air mass, leading to​ widespread cloud cover and precipitation.

the agency predicts that while rain will be prevalent across much of the country,⁣ the ⁢Pre-Balkans and higher elevations‍ will see ​snowfall. In central-northern⁤ Bulgaria, ‌and later​ in the Ludogoriets region, rain is expected to transition ‌to snow as temperatures drop.

temperatures will fluctuate considerably, ranging from a low of around -1°C (-1.8°F) in western valleys to highs of 8-10°C (46-50°F) along the Black Sea coast. the⁤ maximum temperatures across most of ⁤the affected areas ⁤are expected to ​be ​between 2°C (36°F) and 7°C (45°F), with coastal areas potentially reaching ‍10-12°C‍ (50-54°F).
