There are about 800 plants with 293 of which are endemic flora that cannot be found outside Socotra Island. One of the unique plants that grow on Socotra Island is the Dragon Blood tree.
This tree was first described by James Raymond Wellsted in the 1830s who named it Pterocarpus draco. However, it was the Scottish botanist Isaac Bayley Balfour who described the species and gave it its scientific name in 1880.
The tree can grow as high as 10 meters by 3 meters wide. In general, when viewed, it is shaped like an umbrella with branches and branches spreading to the sides, the ends of which are filled with leaves.
The shape of the tree can be attributed to dichotomous branching, each branch divided into two parts. The trunk divides each time the tree flowers. That is why botanists can calculate the approximate age of a tree by counting the number of branches.
This unusual shape turned out to function for his life. Its lush leaves reduce evaporation and help it survive in extremely hot areas.
But, this was also what disturbed the future of the Dragon Blood tree. Excessive use of sap interferes with the life of the tree. Likewise, goat grazing often eats seeds and plant seeds that grow.
He said, the sap of this tree is used by local residents as a medicine for various diseases. Other plants are the giant plant Dorstenia, Dendrosicyos, Pomegranate tree Socotra , etc. Then it is used as a dye, paint, glue, soap, varnish for furniture, incense, and a mixture of chemicals.
