[Société] RunDiabète, an educational course that plays the proximity card

HEALTH. The ARS presented yesterday its first regional therapeutic patient education program, dedicated to diabetes. 168 diabetic patients currently benefit from this support throughout the island.

Proximity, continuity, professionalism. ARS Réunion is playing the winning trifecta with the Regional Patient Therapeutic Education Support and Coordination Unit, the new platform for the fight against chronic diseases supported by the non-profit association OIIS Supported, and financed by the regional health agency. “ There are currently 60 authorized therapeutic education programs on the island, which concern many chronic diseases: metabolic, neurodegenerative, respiratory, cardiovascular, dermatological, cancer … UCEP 2.0 aims to optimize action, coordinate it and make it accessible to all patients », Explains Martine Ladoucette, general manager of ARS Réunion.

If the concept of therapeutic patient education is nothing new, as evidenced by the existence of these 60 authorized programs, UCEP aims to provide support by offering regional reference programs, turnkey such as RunDiabète. , the first to be implemented. There is also a resource center and a space for exchanges between professionals.

UCEP.2.0, placed under the responsibility of a coordinating physician, Dr Cyndie Jaglale-Letniowski, takes care of all the logistics: referencing therapeutic educators, recruiting and convening patients, managing a digital follow-up file for each patient to promote a multidisciplinary approach retain the rooms and provide educational material. ” Currently, all the municipalities of the island can organize sessions. Proximity is a key point of our strategy to fight diabetes », Specifies the director general of the ARS.

Precious tool

For Nicolas Bocquelet, liberal nurse in the West, UCEP 2.0 is a valuable tool for liberal caregivers who can focus on therapeutic education without worrying about logistics. And for the patients: ” If we want a diabetic patient to respect his program of care, he must be allowed to understand the issues. Otherwise, he won’t go to the ophthalmologist for his fundus, for example, and that’s how we have blindness that sets in. »

The RunDiabetes program provides for a 1.5 hour check-up with the patient to determine their expectations. Then, in the following weeks, he can participate in group or individual workshops of one hour and a half each on the disease and its complications, on the follow-up and surveillance of diabetes, on diet and on physical activity. . Then, a final assessment, individually, is planned.

Beyond the launch of RunDiabète, the UCEP 2.0 has several pots on the fire: a regional meeting day for professionals around all-themed TVE in February 2021, the census of all the actors in the field of the TVE , actions to promote its training. Among other actions. One way to get the ETP out of the accessory to propel it through a forced passage.

“A great help”

Carole Germane (Saint-Denis)

“I have been diabetic for two years. It was very stressful to learn this especially since I have two daughters, 16 and 11, and I want to be there for a long time. It was my attending physician who directed me to this program, which is a great help to me, because even if you want to be careful, it doesn’t work when you’re alone. Eating habits take over. Thanks to the ETP, I manage my diet better and I move more. Discussions with other patients are motivating. We encourage each other a lot. “
