Even if the number of new cases is in decline, dengue continues its expansion on the island. The virus has been 2 additional deaths, according to the latest balance sheet of the prefecture, which brings to 13 the number of deaths due to dengue fever since the beginning of the year. From 8 to 14 June, there were 403 cases : 21 municipalities are particularly affected. There are now over 14 900 cases since January.
“The austral winter settles in. This period is favorable to a low circulation of the virus due to the cooler temperatures. Also, the efforts of everyone involved (health authorities, municipalities and inter-municipal associations, and population), should not be released to curb as much as possible the circulation of the dengue fever,” notes the prefecture in its press release published yesterday.
It is in the Western region that the progression of the virus is most marked : it concentrates 43% of confirmed cases. There are reports of a large group of cases in Saint-Leu. The Possession, le Port and Saint-Paul are also involved. If a decrease of cases is observed in the south, a major focus is located in Saint-Pierre. The epidemic is also accelerating in Saint-Denis, Saint-André and Saint-Benoît. There were 567 hospital admissions because of dengue, and 1598 passages to the emergency room.
