The Ceibal General Accident Hospital records an alarming increase in road accidents this year. Until October there have been 60,457 traffic accidents, of which 32 percent correspond to motorcycles.
Dr. Fabiola Reyes, head of the Emergency Department of the aforementioned unit, reported that after the lifting of restrictions due to the pandemic, the accidents attended to have been increasing and in 2023 the increase has been 17 percent compared to the last three years. “The injuries are not the same as a decade ago, now they are more serious with a high possibility of death”he pointed.
Given this situation and in tribute to all those affected and their families, the third Sunday of November of each year is commemorated as the World Day of Remembrance for Victims of Traffic Accidents, for which Social Security reiterates its commitment to providing a response and immediate support, as well as promotion of the prevention of these emergencies.
In that sense, Reyes recalled that the Institute provides comprehensive care to these patients, from emergency services to their return to work. “If the injury caused any disability, the IGSS will continue to support the member through a pension”he explained.
Social Security also has a Survivor pension so that the member, in the event of death, does not leave his or her family helpless.
Prevention is vital
The specialist called for taking appropriate preventive measures to avoid as much as possible being the center of a traffic incident.
In that context, he recommended leaving early so as not to “run”drive with caution, respect traffic laws and signs and use protective equipment. “We have patients whose helmets caused the injury. Remember not to skimp on your health, life is priceless”the professional recommended.
“I want to leave a message to the population and that this is not like a song that we repeat, but we do not apply it to our lives. The injuries are now very serious and one does not value the legs, hands and not being able to get out of bed, until one is a victim.”he finished.
