Social organizations will define in Bolivia whether the president of the nation, Luis Arce, runs again as a candidate for the ruling Movement Towards Socialism (MAS) for the presidential elections scheduled in 2025, the Vice Minister of Communication, Gabriela Alcón, stated this Monday.
“The decision will be assumed by the social organizations, owners of the political instrument,” said the government spokesperson, although she reiterated that this has not yet been decided and that it is something they have insisted on.
For Alcón, Arce’s possible candidacy is not a decision made nor is it urgent on the presidential agenda, but rather the concern at this moment is to work to prevent the MAS from losing its legal personality.
Arce’s eventual nomination as a presidential candidate is at the center of the political debate in Bolivia, a few days before the MAS holds its National Congress at the call of the Unity Pact that supports the Bolivian president.
The National Congress is scheduled for May 3 to 5 in the Bolivian city of El Alto, adjacent to the city of La Paz (west), although the conclave has not yet been endorsed by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE), which is the body in charge of elections.
Within the ruling MAS there is a lack of consensus among those who support former president Evo Morales (2006-2019), who is also seeking re-election and has called another congress for next July 10, in the central department of Cochabamba.
President Arce referred to the issue on Sunday, when consulted within the framework of an event of the Federation of Peasant Women “Bartolina Sisa”, in the town of Sapahaqui, in La Paz.
Arce made reference to next year’s elections and told his political opponents that differences will be resolved at the polls.
The member of the TSE, Tahuichi Quispe, has repeatedly stated that social organizations can present their own presidential candidate supported by the Constitution.
