Facebook began the process on Monday to assign a legal entity in Turkey to adhere to a controversial new law in the country that regulates social media.

The law, passed in July, requires platforms such as Facebook and Twitter to have legal representatives in Turkey who respond to complaints about their content. Companies that refuse will have to pay fines, will be prohibited from broadcasting advertising and will suffer limitations that would make them difficult to use.

“This decision does not alter Facebook’s Community Standards, nor the process established to evaluate requests from governments and we will withdraw our representative if we receive pressure in this regard,” Facebook warned in its statement.

According to the law, the local social media representative will have to respond to individual requests to remove content that violates personal or privacy rights within 48 hours, or otherwise, they will have to give reasons for rejecting the request. The company may have to pay fines if it does not remove the content within 24 hours.

The law also requires cyber data to be stored in Turkey, raising fears in a country where the government has been accused of violating freedom of interest. expression.

This happens the same week in which a security expert recommended to stop using Facebook Messenger because, according to their research, there is no end-to-end protection in terms of group messages from the social network messaging application.
