New York> The baby squirrel nicknamed Peanut, a social media star, has been euthanized. Peanut’s euthanasia was approved by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and the Chemung County Health Department.
Peanut was social media content creator Mark Longo’s favorite pet. Peanut has 534,000 Instagram followers. Peanuts were euthanized due to anonymous complaints of rabies if people were bitten. Authorities said Peanut was being tested for rabies after biting one of the officers while apprehending him.
Longo got Peanut seven years ago. Longo was protecting the orphaned peanut when his mother was hit by a car and died. Longo and his wife Daniela protect more than 300 animals. In addition to Peanut, a raccoon named ‘Fred’ (a mammal found in North America) was put to death.
