Social Media Lawsuits: Over 2,000 Families in the US File Complaints Against TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and more, Citing Negative Impact on Children’s Mental Health

In the United States, more than 2,000 families have filed complaints against social networks, reports CBSNews, and more than 350 lawsuits are expected to be filed this year against TikTok, Snapchat, YouTube, Roblox and Meta, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook.

The plaintiff parents claim that these social networks have had a negative impact on the mental health of their children, pushing them towards depression or eating disorders and, in some cases, that they have contributed to their deaths.

Internal memos have revealed that Facebook employees raised concerns about research the company conducted that found Instagram made one in three teenage girls more uncomfortable with their bodies, and teens who used app had higher rates of anxiety and depression than others.

« They intentionally designed a product that is addictive “, denounces Matt Bergman, a lawyer who created the Social Media Victims Law Center (SMVLC) and represents more than 1,800 families. “ They know that if kids stay online, they make more money. It doesn’t matter how harmful the material is. »

He pleads for an improvement in the verification of the age of users, and to put an end to addictive algorithms, which place some in loops of pro-anorexic content in particular.
