Quick money from grieving people? The operator of several cemeteries warns of a scam on his Facebook pages.

The operator of several cemeteries in Rhineland-Palatinate warns against fraudsters who are targeting his Facebook pages are aimed at grieving people. Grieving people are often in a vulnerable phase of life and have now become a target group for “love scammers,” said the German Cemetery Association, which operates 14 cemeteries in Germany. The Rhein-Taunus Crematorium also belongs to the company.

“These scammers use Facebook to try to gain the trust of their victims in order to ultimately exploit them financially,” said managing director Judith Könsgen. The social media team has noticed more suspicious comments in recent weeks, mostly aimed at older women.

“There is a perfidious strategy behind these seemingly harmless messages: the scammers try to build trust through repeated attempts to contact people,” says Könsgen. They then demand money. Suspicious comments are deleted and profiles reported, said the managing director. Nevertheless, she would like more support and faster reactions from Facebook.
