VOGELSBERG (ol). A reduction in water abstraction and better financial resources – these are two central demands of the Vogelsberg SPD when it comes to groundwater protection in the Hohen Vogelsberg.
In a press release, the chairman and top candidate of the Social Democrats for the district council election, Patrick Krug, as well as the Scottish mayor Susanne Schaab and Grebenhain’s mayor Sebastian Stang, both of whom are also running for the district council on the SPD list.
“We demand better protection of our natural area through less water abstraction. It cannot be that in Rhein-Main cars are washed with the food drinking water, pools are filled and gardens are watered, while here trees are dying, springs and streams are drying up and the formation of new groundwater continues to decline. The metropolitan area has to invest significantly more in its own supply and in the conversion to service water systems, ”says Schotten’s Mayor Susanne Schaab, summarizing the environmental problem.
As early as August 2018, the Vogelsberg District Assembly, with the support of the Social Democrats, adopted its model for integrated water resource management in Rhine-Main, the topicality of which has not changed.
Point out grievances, make people think again
The Vogelsberger SPD is also concerned with better financial resources and appropriate remuneration for services in nature, bird and groundwater protection. “The protected areas here, some of which are extensive, are associated with numerous obstacles and development restrictions, which automatically lead to lower tax revenues for the municipalities,” says Grebenhains Mayor Sebastian Stang, describing the financial side of the demands. The income from the services that are relevant to society as a whole would be booked in Rhein-Main – be it in the form of the significantly lower water prices or in the form of the nice profits that the big cities make with the sale of Vogelsberg groundwater.
“Unfortunately, those who benefit from this system are persistent in Hessian state politics. You can see that in the fact that almost nothing has changed in the last two years, ”says party chairman Patrick Krug, summarizing the status quo. “Nobody dares to speak publicly about expanding groundwater abstraction. But Hesse is still a long way from rethinking in the direction of less consumption of the resource drinking water and real, fair financial compensation between city and state. “
In order to achieve these goals, strong voices are needed in the district politicians who did not shy away from putting their fingers further into these wounds, which repeatedly pointed out the existing grievances and advocate a change in the minds and the real politics in Wiesbaden and Rhine-Main use. “This is what the three of us stand for together with the Vogelsberg SPD,” said Patrick Krug, Susanne Schaab and Sebastian Stang in conclusion.
