The social-democrat MEP Victor Negrescu claims that the PSD does not refuse the government and that, if the protocol regarding the rotation of prime ministers is not respected, the social-democrats will trigger early elections.
Victor Negrescu was asked, on Saturday, on the Insider Politic show on Prima TV, if the PSD refuses the government or is afraid of responsibility, he replied that the social democrats have already prepared the government program.
“PSD does not refuse governance and we are not afraid to assume responsibility for everything that means executive functions in the Government of Romania. In this sense, we have prepared, in fact, a government program for the moment when the rotation of prime ministers will be carried out, and also in this logic, I can tell you that the whole team is prepared to implement everything that we promised to the Romanians ( …)”, declared Negrescu.
Also, the MEP was asked why the PSD is not in government already.
“Things are also related to the current political context. We must also look at what the Romanians want, we must also look at the social situation in Romania and we have seen that, indeed, in recent weeks there have been social tensions also generated by these demands of the teachers, but there are also other problems related to all that means the delays in what means the implementation of the PNRR. There are significant delays (…) The most likely scenario is that the prime minister’s rotation will be completed by the end of this parliamentary session. I think it is important to refer to the activity of the Parliament and to the payment requests from the PNRR”, replied Victor Negrescu.
Negrescu added that one of the options would be early elections, if the rotation of prime ministers is not respected.
“For the PSD, things are quite clear, either we respect the protocol, or automatically the coalition can no longer function and the only possible solution, the only alternative is to go back to the Romanians for elections, early elections. This would not be a very big problem either, PSD is always in touch with the Romanians and we are not afraid to go to them so that they can express their points of view. We are also prepared for such a moment. It is not the scenario we want, we prefer to offer the Romanians a stable government, but some who possibly circulate this scenario, circulate as if someone is afraid of the electoral moment, or the PSD has never been afraid to go towards the Romanians . If this were the scenario, we are ready for it, although we have the written government program and we would prefer to go further in a coalition, a coalition formed by the three parties, as was agreed in the protocol. We hope that everyone will understand the need for stability in Romania and not push Romania towards this scenario of early elections. We don’t need such a moment. I said very clearly, we must overcome this electoral logic and focus on everything we must do for the Romanians”, declared Negrescu.
Asked if UDMR should remain in the coalition, Negrescu stated that a stable majority is needed.
“We believe that we need a stable majority in the Romanian Parliament”, stated Victor Negrescu.
