Social Conflict at Delhaize: Activists Call for Delhaize Boycott

Dozens of activists are standing at Delhaize Hankar in Auderghem. They try to convince people not to do their shopping in the supermarket, and thus boycott Delhaize.

The social conflict at Delhaize has been going on for months now. The supermarket chain announced in March that it would sell its 128 stores to independent operators. The trade unions opposed this and repeatedly took action. External action groups are also calling for a boycott of Delhaize.

“This is our seventh action,” said Matthis, member of the support committee for Delhaize employees who are currently on strike against the decision to franchise the stores. “Delhaize’s decision creates significant pressure on working conditions and wages, so the workers are on strike. But the management has forced the stores to reopen, so the workers are asking the customers, and we support them in this request, to boycott until the conflict is over.”

The support committee also visited Delhaize Boondael today. “Both stores are two of the first 15 stores expected to be franchised in the coming months,” explains Matthis. “With these actions we want to convince customers to shop elsewhere. At the same time we want to make it clear to the people who want to buy these stores that we will continue to boycott them.”
