Berlin (dpa / bb) – On the occasion of the visually impaired day on June 6, ten street bollards red and white knitted hats were put on at the Rotes Rathaus in Berlin. With the campaign, the General Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired Berlin (ABSV) wanted to set an example on Thursday morning for more safety for visually impaired people and senior citizens on the city’s footpaths.

“Contrasts are important for visually impaired people,” said ABSV spokeswoman Paloma Rändel. The gray bollards could not be seen as well as they hardly differed in color from the surroundings. The association therefore demands that the obstacles be permanently marked with high contrast. According to the association, there are 25,000 blind and visually impaired people in Berlin.

According to the ABSV, the Social Association Berlin-Brandenburg (SoVD), the “Discovering Hands” project and the state representative for people with disabilities, Christine Braunert-Rümenapf, also took part in the campaign at the Rotes Rathaus.

Similar campaigns are planned in other German cities in the coming days. In Berlin, more bollards are to be marked on other town halls by June 11, as Rändel said. The bollards at the Rotes Rathaus can keep their self-knitted hats at the entrance of the building until at least next week.
