In a week that saw Soccer Canada confirm the firing of coach Bev Priestman, there is more bad news for the Canadian Women’s Team.
Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor revealed on Saturday that defender Kadeisha Buchanan is sidelined with an anterior cruciate ligament injury.
Bompastor made the announcement following Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Manchester City, which took the team to the top of the Women’s Super League table.
“I have sad news to share with you. I didn’t want to talk about it before since we got the results this morning, but she tore her anterior cruciate ligament after the game against Liverpool (3-0 Chelsea win this Sunday). Like I said, I’m very sad and I didn’t want to talk about this situation before the game because it might take away the focus of the game and I wanted my players to focus on the game against Man City. »
“Everyone in the team is devastated by the news. She did very well. She is an important player for us, but this is the current situation. We will support her as much as possible. She is strong and she is fine. »
With Chelsea’s 7-0–0 record, Bompastor became the first coach in WSL history to start a tenure with seven straight wins.
Buchanan, a 29-year-old native of Brampton, played 154 games for Canada, forming a good duo with Vanessa Gilles.
The Canadian Women’s Team, ranked sixth in the FIFA rankings, will face Iceland (No. 13) on Nov. 29 and South Korea (No. 19) on Dec. 3 in Murcia, Spain.
