Freiburg (dpa / lsw) – How long he has been the coach of SC Freiburg, Christian Streich might have realized again on Friday. Shortly before the 55-year-old spoke about the home game against Hertha BSC on Sunday (3.30 p.m. / Sky), FC Schalke 04 broke up with coach Manuel Baum and reactivated Huub Stevens. Two days after the 2-0 defeat against the Breisgauer it was over for Baum – although he had only seen ten Bundesliga games as a coach at the crisis club. Streich, on the other hand, could celebrate his 10th year at SC in a year. At least that is what sports director Jochen Saier would like.
“The fascinating thing is that this fire is still blazing in him, that the energy is still there. The hope is that this path will continue together,” Saier told the German press agency. They have been walking this path in Breisgau for nine years now, and they did not allow themselves to be dissuaded from it even by relegation. Discussions in the future will show whether Streich will actually extend his contract, which will expire in the summer, for another year. In any case, the trainer himself was pleased with the words of his superior.
“It’s just an acknowledgment,” he said. “I know that Jochen means it exactly as he says it. This is a total pleasure for me, because it simply thinks far-sightedly and not in terms of short-term results.” The outcome of the game on Sunday will therefore not change the appreciation for Streich at the sports club. After the last two wins in a row, the Freiburg team could even distance Hertha, who started with great ambitions, to four points with another success. Streich’s guideline for the team will be the same as always: “Process everything.” Because: “First comes the work, then comes the art.”
The tense atmosphere at SC a week ago has completely changed thanks to the latest success stories. Streich chatted freely and carefree on Friday, but he now also wants to bring this extraordinary year to a sensible end. Preferably with the third win in a row against the Berliners – and the move into the cup round of 16 thanks to another success next Wednesday at VfB Stuttgart.
