Freiburg (dpa) – Portugal’s former exceptional professional Rui Costa played a decisive role in the move from national soccer player Luca Waldschmidt to Benfica Lisbon. The 48-year-old sports director from Benfica came to Freiburg to convince the then SC player of a transfer.
“That made an impression. I still remember how Rui Costa won the Champions League with AC Milan as a player. Suddenly he was standing in front of me,” Waldschmidt told “Sport Bild” (Wednesday). “He told me he really wanted me.” Shortly afterwards, the 24-year-old moved to Portugal’s capital. As a player, Costa won the Champions League in 2003 with AC Milan.
