Freiburg (dpa / lsw) – Christian Streich would have loved to do without a press conference on New Year’s Eve. It was not the first time on Thursday that the SC Freiburg coach sat in front of the press between Christmas and New Year. On December 29, 2011, Streich was promoted from co-coach to head coach at the sports club after Marcus Sorg’s dismissal. Almost exactly nine years later, he faces another of numerous games as Bundesliga coach before the away game at TSG Hoffenheim on Saturday (3:30 p.m. / Sky).
When asked about the high points of the nine years, he couldn’t think of anything at first. “And if I thought about it, it would take five hours – but then there would also be a few lows,” said the 55-year-old. Daily work is crucial for him. “My highlight is being able to work with so many young people who are good at playing football. That’s what I love to do all my life.”
That’s why he didn’t want to complain too much about the very short Christmas break, which he also enjoyed because it was less hectic due to the Corona. And after that he was also happy to “see the boys again”, although normally at that time he would “run up the mountain in the snow”. “Now we’re just trying to conquer Hoffenheim,” said Streich with a smile. However, he also has some wishes for the start of the new year, which extend beyond a victory in Hoffenheim and well beyond the football field.
“I wish that everyone stays healthy and that those who are sick get well,” said Streich. In view of the continuing high number of corona infections and deaths, this is “the most important wish”. The SC trainer showed no understanding for people who consider wearing a mask to be nonsense, and overall he hopes for more “social solidarity and solidarity with the weak”.
For him, this also includes caring for the people in the refugee camps who have to endure the snow without warm clothing or food. “It would be a great wish of mine that we would take a little bit of money into our hands in this incredibly rich country,” said Streich.
