Freiburg/Berlin (dpa/bb) – 1. FC Union Berlin will compete in the European Cup next season, but the Champions League is no longer a realistic option. After RB Leipzig’s 4-0 win against FC Augsburg on Sunday evening, the Irons are three points behind fourth-placed Leipzig before the last matchday of the Bundesliga. Due to the goal difference being 30 goals worse, this deficit should no longer be catchable for the Köpenickers.

On Saturday, Union had secured another entry into the European Cup with a 4-1 win at SC Freiburg. The Irons still have to clarify next Saturday against VfL Bochum (3.30 p.m. / Sky) the question of which European Cup they will compete in this time. With a win against Bochum, Cologne would be distanced as the last rival for a place in the Europa League. If things go badly, the playoffs for the Conference League will start again in August.
