Freiburg (AP) – The botched away trip to Freiburg could hurt Borussia Dortmund even more when looking at the table. With the 1: 2 (0: 0) against Christian Streich’s team, BVB experienced the next severe setback in the fight for the minimum goal and had to increase the gap to the Champions League ranks on Saturday. “We are very disappointed and angry about what happened here,” said BVB trainer Edin Terzic: “You have to look in the mirror and turn it off as quickly as possible.”
Because VfL Wolfsburg and Bayer Leverkusen won, the gap to third place in the Bundesliga is initially six, and fourth at least three points. The first goal by top talent Youssoufa Moukoko alone was far too little for Dortmund, who were already far behind in the championship race (76th). With the only 16-year-olds, there was more vigor in the performance of the Westphalia. Moukoko came after an hour for captain Marco Reus, hit the post shortly after being substituted on and had the last chance of the game.
Terzic then complained about the mentality. It was about doing the “extra meter” – and not just when you fall behind, the coach criticized. With a double strike shortly after the break, Wooyeong Jeong (49th) and Jonathan Schmid (52nd) shocked the guests in the Black Forest Stadium with national coach Joachim Löw as a spectator and made the Freiburg team cheer.
When conceding the second goal, BVB goalkeeper Marwin Hitz, deputy of the injured and not undisputed regular keeper Roman Bürki, looked unhappy. Fullback Schmid pulled from the right corner of the penalty area. Hitz was on the ball, but he didn’t prevent the 0-2. The Swiss first stayed with his head down on the lawn. The first hit was also from a distance.
Terzic didn’t like the first half. “We gave way too many balls in promising positions,” he argued. “At the beginning there were far too many inaccuracies on both sides. There was a lot more in there for us too.”
BVB came with a clear intention. The club now wants to “start a series”, licensed player boss Sebastian Kehl had announced before the game on Sky TV: “We now need victories to achieve the goals that we have set ourselves in the league”, said the former midfielder. But instead there was the fourth defeat and the third away defeat in a row in the 9th Bundesliga game under Terzic.
Kehl admitted that the inconsistency of the past few months has been a major concern, but also said: “We have a few young players, so it is normal for certain fluctuations to occur.” The questions will continue to arise.
Freiburg coach Christian Streich no longer has to answer when he will win against Dortmund for the first time. The sports club had previously been unsuccessful in 19 Bundesliga duels with BVB; the last victory in this comparison was in May 2010. Even the longest-serving coach in the first division was not yet in office.
It was only late that he realized the right tactics for this game, said Streich, who had switched to a back four and had got his team in for a video session unusually late on Friday. “We’re the luckier ones at the end,” he said – and that in Freiburg’s 700th Bundesliga match: “It’s fantastic what has happened in this club in the last 30 years.”
