Frankfurt / Main (dpa / lhe) – Now the series champion VfL Wolfsburg can come! Record winner Eintracht Frankfurt can continue to dream of the next big coup in the women’s DFB Cup. The club, which started as 1. FFC Frankfurt until the beginning of this season, is in the final for the 14th time on Saturday after a 2-1 (0-1) against SC Freiburg and meets a double on May 30th -Winner VfL Wolfsburg, who won the second semi-final 2-0 against FC Bayern on Easter Sunday.
“We look forward to you”, the Hessian club told VfL after they won the eagerly awaited top game against the team from Munich, which was flawless in the league. Marie Müller (13th minute) had put Freiburg, the cup finalists of 2019, in the lead in the Frankfurt stadium before Lara Prasnikar (47th) and the 17-year-old Camilla Küver (60th) played in favor of the Hessians turned.
“The girls now deserve to celebrate a little and not just drink a beer after the win. If there are a few more in the end, that’s okay too,” said coach Niko Arnautis. Now the tenth triumph in the prestigious cup competition seems possible despite being an outsider in the final.
Arnautis himself was so enthusiastic about his team’s morale that he wanted to reward himself as well. “I’ll have a beer first and I promise everyone that I’ll have at least one more ouzo tonight,” said the 41-year-old. The entire team, which is lagging behind in terms of sport in the Bundesliga season, is “incredibly happy and grateful”.
The young winning goal scorer was thrilled. “After the final whistle, I first had to do it myself,” said the 17-year-old, who praised sports director Siegfried Dietrich as a “top talent”. For Küver, the semi-final game was, in his own words, “an absolute highlight game and also a very big goal”.
Now an even bigger game is waiting at the end of May. Dietrich is pleased that “we are now able to represent the eagle family in Cologne in the first year of the year”. The Hessians last won the title in the 2013/14 season. Since then, Wolfsburg has triumphed in all six trophy editions.
