Düsseldorf (dpa) – Fortuna Düsseldorf’s new head coach Christian Preußer started his first team training session with his new team on Saturday in a shirt with long sleeves. In midsummer temperatures, the 37-year-old had to protect himself in warmer clothes because of a sunburn. The native of Berlin, who had previously trained the second team of SC Freiburg and led it into the third division, started work on the training grounds at the arena with a relatively small group of players.
The new head coach had 17 players at the start, including the only newcomer Nicklas Shipnoski from 1. FC Saarbrücken. A total of seven professionals were absent due to injury or national team commitments. Jean Zimmer, who returned from a loan to 1. FC Kaiserslautern, has not yet participated in training after his second vaccination, but will be there for the next few units. “Talks are in progress, the interest from Kaiserslautern is well known. But as of now he’s joining our training,” said Preusser. It remains to be seen whether the Düsseldorf team will start the new season with the right-back.
“It is now important not to lose any time,” said Preusser at his presentation on Friday. Above all, further management planning must be pushed forward. “We’re looking at how we can strengthen the squad, but we won’t have a major upheaval. The core of the team is in place,” said Preusser. But there could be personal news soon. “We are very optimistic that we might be able to announce something,” revealed the new head coach.
The first test match for the Düsseldorf team is scheduled for next Wednesday at TSV Meerbusch (6.30 p.m.). From July 2nd to 7th, the fifth of the season will go to a training camp in Austria. The first second division game day is scheduled for July 23rd to 25th.
