CF Montreal secured a second straight win and played their fifth straight game without loss on Wednesday night, defeating New York City FC by 2-1, in a home game played at Exploria Stadium, in Orlando.
Romell Quioto ended an almost three-month shortage by scoring the winning net in the 73rd minute. Mason Toye, on his first career penalty in MLS, scored CF Montreal’s other goal (5-3-4) in the 43rd minute.
Keaton Parks gave New York City FC the lead, beating goaltender James Pantemis, who blocked three balls for his third win this season.
This is the first time this season that CF Montreal, which was without midfielder Samuel Piette and defender Kamal MIller, has won two consecutive games.
In addition to extending its current streak of success, CF Montreal ended a series of nine games without a win (0-5-4) against the New York team. The last – and only – victory for the Montreal team against New York City FC dates back to August 1, 2015.
CF Montreal will finally return home to hold their next training sessions before their next game, on Saturday July 17, against FC Cincinnati, at a local stadium that remains to be determined.
Action on both sides
If some early matches can test the patience of fans eager for action and highlights, Wednesday’s would have probably satisfied them.
After the first 20 minutes of play, each of the two teams had attempted three shots towards the opposing net. That does not include that of Quioto who beat goalkeeper Luis Barraza in the 45th second of play before the streak was called off due to an offside, depriving the Honduran of his first goal since April 17.
Quioto, who played his last game with CF Montreal before joining the Honduran national team in the Gold Cup, had an excellent first half and had two other great opportunities to rock the strings, but without success. .
It was New York City FC who finally opened the scoring, in the 29th minute, when Parks recovered a ball entering the penalty area and beat Pantemis with a low shot, to the right of the Quebec goalkeeper.
It was the first time this season that Wilfried Nancy’s troops conceded the first goal of a match in the first half.
The Montreal team, however, responded with two minutes to play at the half thanks to Toye, who converted the penalty caused by Djordje Mihailovic by being caught in the penalty area.
The start of the second half was much less interesting than the first, while we were entitled to as many yellow cards (two, one on each side) as shots attempted (two, one on each side) during the first quarter of an hour of play.
Quioto was finally rewarded for his efforts in the first half by scoring his second goal of the season, after a assist from Djordje Mihailovic.
CF Montreal held on for the last 15 minutes of regulation time plus some six minutes of stoppage time.
