Bayern Munich defended their lead in the Bundesliga with a win at Union Berlin.

With the 5: 2 (3: 1) victory on Saturday (October 30, 2021) in Berlin, Bayern are one point ahead of Borussia Dortmund with 25 points. Union remains in sixth place, at least for the time being.
“Union has been unbeaten at home in 21 games. We know what kind of force they can develop with the fans behind them. But especially in the first half, we took the wind out of their sails with our performance,” said Munich’s co- Coach Dino Toppmöller at the Sportschau microphone, who replaced head coach Julian Nagelsmann, who was still missing due to a corona infection, on the sidelines.

Bavaria with the will to make amends
Bayern immediately showed that they wanted to at least forget a bit about Gladbach’s 5-0 win in the cup. Paul Jaeckel blocked a shot by Leroy Sané with his hand, Robert Lewandowski converted the penalty into the lead (15th minute). After Lewandowski had been fouled in front of the Berlin penalty area, he came on a free-kick combination by Kimmich and Müller to the shot and increased to 2-0 (23). Sané made a preliminary decision with the 3-0 win when Müller extended a cross from Kingsley Coman to him (35th).
Niko Gießelmann provided Union with a direct acceptance at least for the connection before the break, Genki Haraguchi had prepared the goal (43.). “With the 1: 3 we got hope back. After the break we really saw Union play: tirelessly. We were able to create opportunities,” commented Berlin coach Urs Fischer.
Union with pressure, but the Bavarians increase
Immediately after the break, Union indeed had a strong phase and pushed for the second goal. Sheraldo Becker failed twice (52nd / 57th).
And so Bayern increased: Coman got the ball to Müller’s right, pulled inside and scored for Bayern’s fourth goal (60th). Union kept hope when Kevin Behrens served Julian Ryerson in the 64th minute and scored to 2: 4. But Bayern increased again in the end: Dayot Upamecano brought the ball forward, free Müller, who flicked the ball into the right corner of the penalty area (79th).
Müller: “We’re out of the cup anyway”
For Bayern it was a good answer to the cup failure in Mönchengladbach. “Now we won and played convincingly,” said Müller, who was involved in four goals: “Now we’re so relaxed here, we’re out of the cup anyway. We didn’t just lose a game, we lost a competition.”
“The two goals we conceded are of course annoying,” said goalkeeper Manuel Neuer: “But we are still satisfied that we have shown a different face.”
Bayern in the Champions League against Benfica
In the Champions League, FC Bayern will be in action on Tuesday (November 2nd, 2021) in the home game against Benfica Lisbon. 1. FC Union Berlin is also international: on Thursday (November 4th, 2021) the Berliners will meet Feyenoord in the Europa Conference League in the Olympic Stadium.
In the Bundesliga, Bayern will continue with a home game against SC Freiburg on the 11th matchday on Saturday (November 6th, 2021). Union is in action at 1. FC Köln one day later.
