Berlin (dpa) – For Borussia Dortmund’s managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke, the mentality of the BVB team is “not the problem this year”. The team had often “fought their way into games” this season and won them, said the 62-year-old on Sunday on TV station Bild with a view of Dortmund’s 2: 3 on Saturday evening at Hertha BSC. “We have to make sure that we don’t fail under the pressure of always being measured against Bayern. We have to look to ourselves.”
BVB are nine points behind league leaders FC Bayern after the defeat in Berlin. “I can read a table and I also know what it means when Bayern Munich are nine points ahead,” said Watzke, who “didn’t want to gloss over anything”. He gets angry “if we lose this dirty game yesterday”. The lawn in the Olympic Stadium was also “unworthy of a Bundesliga club”.
“We wanted to get a little closer this year,” said the BVB boss, who will also serve as chairman of the supervisory board of the German Football League in the future. But Bayern would also have to come to terms with this. “The way Bayern are playing again now, you just can’t get it,” said Watzke.
