The New York Red Bulls officially started training for the upcoming season in North American Major League Soccer (MLS) on Monday. The team of head coach Gerhard Struber is in the midst of upheaval, a good dozen still rather unknown players are new to the first team.

One should therefore not expect quick success “overnight”. “I think we need time for that,” said Struber in an online press conference. However, the Salzburg resident was confident that he would be able to build something up with the existing player material and be able to play for titles in the long term.
“We are ready to have a very tough fight,” he said. It is particularly important for the former WAC and Barnsley coach to anchor the cornerstones of the game philosophy more firmly. “When it comes to Red Bull identity, we speak of high intensity, of pressing,” said Struber. This requires improved positional play, but also a plan B if you are in possession of the ball yourself. He wants to work on this with the team until the start of the season on April 17th.
Departures have to be coped with
In the preseason, the New Yorkers failed in the first play-off round in November at the eventual champions Columbus Crew. Since then, some of the pillars have left the club, and expensive additions cannot currently be financed, also due to the stresses of the CoV crisis.
The best-known players are US team defender Aaron Long, Styrian Daniel Royer and 17-year-old top talent Caden Clark, who has already been predicted to move to RB Leipzig and Austria’s champions Salzburg. There are also two Salzburg loans in the squad: goalkeeper Carlos Coronel and midfielder Youba Diarra.
