When a best-selling book is made into a movie, fans of the book often react with mixed feelings. This is the case with the movie adaptation of Colleen Hoovers roman It Ends With Usstarring Blake Lively, nothing else.
Experts expect ‘It Ends With Us’ to score well
Colleen Hoover’s novel is based on the relationship between the author’s mother and father. She described the story she wrote as “the most difficult book” she has ever written. It explores the complex nature of generational trauma as a woman tries to break the cycle of abuse and find a healthy, romantic relationship. With estimated total sales of a whopping 30 million, it is a novel that many fans can relate to.
It is expected that Deadpool & Wolverine (with Blake Lively’s husband, Ryan Reynolds) dethroning the box office. While some people are counting down the minutes until they can see the film in theaters, other fans seem more anxious. Did the filmmakers honor the book? If so, it will be one of the biggest movies of the year?
This is what fans of the movie ‘It Ends With Us’ are saying
Whether it’s Blake Lively’s daring, floral outfits during promotional tours and press conferences, the fact that Hoover is considered a controversial author or the fact that an American advertisement announced the film as ‘the female film event of the year’: there is a lot of fuss surrounding the film.
Maybe that tagline wasn’t the smartest choice, but there are still plenty of loyal fans who hope the film reaches people and takes its themes seriously. One X user posted, “I’m so sick of people It Ends With Us slander, as if I don’t know the writer is controversial, but the book is really good and it’s about REAL issues of abusive families and how it’s not that easy to leave and how not everything is rosy.’
How does the film relate to the novel?
The film’s casting has been somewhat controversial. Since the announcement that Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni the two leads Lily and Ryle were to play in the film, Colleen was criticized for the significant age differences between the actors and their It Ends With Us-personages.
Blake, 35, is more than a decade older than the 23-year-old protagonist. Justin, who is also directing the film adaptation of the book, is nine years older than his 30-year-old counterpart in the book. One fan said on X: ‘I wanted It Ends With Us actually see it in the cinema, but wtfthey made the characters so much older than in the book. They made the scenes so sexualized that the innocence of teenage romance has been lost.’
The author later explained that aging the characters was a conscious creative choice. In June, she said, “When I It Ends With Us wrote, it was young adult genre very popular. You wrote college-age characters. When I started making this movie, I thought, we have to age the characters, because I messed up. So that’s my fault.’
Who is in the ‘It Ends With Us’ cast?
As previously mentioned, Blake Lively plays Lily Bloom and Justin Baldoni Ryle Kincaid in the movie. It Ends With Us also includes actor Brandon Sklenar (Vice), actress Isabela Ferrer, who is largely new to the scene, and actor Alex Neustaedter (Colony) full of cast.
