So that you don’t get confused about the contents of Pertalite or Pertamax on a motorbike, know this

Jakarta

Each motor has been designed in such a way to ‘chug’ a certain type of fuel. Using fuel that does not match the engine specifications is carried out continuously, then this can trigger problems.

For example, making the rest of the combustion process accumulate and the engine appears unusual sounds and vibrations (knocking), it will even damage engine components.

Therefore, you should not choose fuel for motorcycles referring to the price. To maintain engine durability, there are several things that must be considered before choosing fuel, as quoted on the following Pertamina page.

1. Adjust to Engine Compression

The engine compression ratio is an important factor before determining the choice of fuel. The compression ratio of the engine is a value that indicates the ratio of the volume of the combustion chamber from the largest capacity to the smallest capacity.

You can find out the engine compression ratio figure from the Owner’s Manual which was obtained when you purchased the motorcycle. The higher the engine compression ratio of a motor, the higher the octane number of the fuel required.

2. Motor Cooling System

For motorcycles that have not used a radiator system, please be careful in determining the choice of fuel. The higher the octane in the fuel, the higher the temperature produced. That way, you should be aware that the engine is overheating.

In Indonesia, currently there are several types of fuel offered. For gasoline type fuel from Pertamina, there are Premium, Pertalite, Pertamax, to Pertamax Turbo. Each of these fuels has been adjusted for a certain engine compression ratio. Premium is usually intended for engines with a compression ratio of 7:1 to 8:1.

Then, Pertalite fuel with an octane number of 90 is suitable for vehicles with an engine compression ratio of 9:1-10:1. The RON number is higher on Pertamax, making it suitable for use on 10:1 and 11:1 engines. Lastly, there is the Pertamax Turbo with an octane number of 98, which is intended for vehicles with a compression ratio of 11:1 to 12:1.
