So that the drinking water does not run out in the region – Freiburg

The regional utility company Badenova invests in water supply / work in the Hochbehlter am Schlossberg and in the waterworks in Hausen.

BREISGAU-HOCHSCHWARZWALD / FREIBURG (BZ). Drinking water is the number 1 foodstuff and must meet the highest quality standards at all times. This is what the utility company Badenova writes. The basis for this is “an always well maintained and modern drinking water infrastructure”. The company is currently renovating the Hochbehlter Schlossberg on the edge of Freiburg’s city center and is investing in new technical systems in the waterworks in Hausen. Even during the corona pandemic, the commitment to high drinking water quality continues unhindered, Badenova assures.

According to the supplier, the Hochbehlter Schlossberg is one of the longest-serving and most central pillars of the water supply for Freiburg’s old town. Together with the Wasserschlssle in the Sternwald, it provides people east of the railroad line. The Hochbehlter from 1874 to 1876 received a new inner lining made of polyethylene sheets (PE) in his two water chambers, which were specially approved for drinking water. So plasticizers could not get into the water, is assured. The lining and all-round renewal of the regulating valves should be completed in summer 2021. According to the company, the exposed location on the Schlossberg poses a challenge for the renovation, just as the Hochbehlter is a listed building. Among other things, the façade and arched staircases made of red sandstone inside are considered to be worthy of preservation and conservation and are classified as an industrial and cultural monument.

Storage volume: 3.7 million liters of water

The same applies to the Hochbehlter Wasserschlssle in Freiburg’s Sternwald, which is clearly visible from the Wiehre. This was already completely renovated in 2010. The water chambers of this high tank, which lies below the lookout point at the water site, together have a storage volume of 3.7 million liters of water. According to Badenova, the dimensions of the Hochbehlters are 54 meters by 19 meters by seven meters. The amount of water to be stored in it is sufficient to supply around 30,000 inhabitants every day. Little is recognizable from the outside, since the building has been fitted into the terrain and many areas are underground. The facade of the company building was restored in 1992 from the supporting wall to the balustrade. The running fountain embedded in the supporting wall is supplied with fresh drinking water from the Hochbehlter.

Another major investment for the sustainability of the drinking water infrastructure concerns the waterworks in Hausen an der Mhlin. According to the water supplier, work is underway to set up a new UV disinfection stage for the abbot or to inactivate pathogenic microorganisms such as bacteria. The company explains that UV radiation in the wave range between 200 and 30 nanometers reliably achieves this.

A main water pump, which is of central importance, will also be replaced. It serves to pump water from Hausen to Freiburg. The waterworks in Ebnet and in Hausen are the mainstays of the drinking water supply and secure each other.
