So many people tested positive for corona during the second wave in your municipality

RTL Nieuws has listed the RIVM figures for each municipality over the past two months. Relatively most infections took place in the municipality of Bunschoten between 1 October and 1 December.

In Bunschoten, 4.9 percent of the residents have been tested positive for the corona virus in the past two months. This means that 1 in 21 inhabitants has become infected here. That equates to multiple infections per street, school or church. After Bunschoten, most inhabitants in Urk (4.8 percent) and Tubbergen (4.6 percent) became infected.

Large families and strong family ties

How is it possible that these regions in particular score so high? Many different factors can play a role. One of these factors can be family size. What is striking is that the household size is larger than average in Bunschoten, Urk and Tubbergen. The weekly epidemiological reports from the RIVM show that many infections, of which a source is known, take place at home. The chance that more people will become infected at the same time is greater in large families than in small families.

The map shows that some of the municipalities in the Twente region are turning red. “This can be partly explained in socio-cultural terms by the strong family ties. Also here in Twente, compared to the rest of the Netherlands, many more people are members of an association”, explains Gert-Jan Hospers, Twente expert and professor of the City of Amsterdam Region at Radboud University.

Traditionally

According to Hospers, people from Twente are law-abiding and take the disease very seriously. “It is not the case that the mentality of ‘it will not go that fast’ is an issue in Twente. It is much more that they stick to certain traditions. People are used to coming together. Even though they are less active now. visiting each other, it is still more than in the rest of the Netherlands. ”

In addition, the people in Twente are very much tied to the region. “People often work within the region where they live. Another economic explanation is that it is not always possible to work from home in this region. In Twente we have a lot of manufacturing industry and production companies. At those companies it is sometimes a bit more difficult to be five feet away. to keep.”

Hospers explains that an interesting parallel can be drawn with the cultural minority groups in large cities. “These groups also move in a relatively small area, have strong family ties, visit each other and do work that is not always possible from home.”

Neighborhood

The spokesperson for the municipality of Tubbergen recognizes the togetherness that Hospers describes. “In Tubbergen there has always been a feeling of kinship and looking after each other: we call it Neighborship here. It has remained the same in this time of the corona.” But the spokesperson also emphasizes that the residents of Tubbergen take their responsibility.
