According to data from the Office of the Attorney General of the Nation, so far in 2023, with a cut-off date of May 8, 2,753 cases of theft from foreigners have been registered. On average, this entity highlights, per day, 21 cases have been filed.

These data, compiled by the Prosecutor’s Office’s Criminal, Oral and Accusatory System (SPOA) case management information system, are the result of different circumstances, since each victim, explains the authority, has lived a different story.

As detailed by the SPOA, while there are cases that reach the hands of the authorities, there are others that are not reported. The entity explains that those who report usually do so because they lost highly important documents, for example, their passports. Those tourists who lose different valuables usually leave the city out of fear, and avoid informing the competent authorities.

The Office of the Attorney General of the Nation points out that the places in the country where foreign tourists tend to be victims of theft, mostly, are in the city of Bogotá and in the departments of Antioquia, Valle del Cauca, Bolívar and Magdalena. Those who are attacked are more frequently Venezuelan citizens or people from the United States and Europe.

Figures from the same entity indicate that by the end of 2022, 5,679 thefts from foreigners were registered, that is, on average, 15 per day.
