So far, 23,000 people have attended the bird watch

The overall running order of the event organized by the Czech Ornithological Society (ČSO) is given at web. People can submit the results of their observations until January 14.

Last year, the event was attended by 27,123 people who observed 538,607 birds during the 19,214 census. “Every year the number of participants grows, which is very gratifying. Voluntary public participation is the only way to obtain the necessary data from a large area. Many participants deserve a big thank you,” said CSO Director Zdeněk Vermouzek.

This year is the fourth year. The census began on Friday. During the hourly observation, the participants always recorded the highest number of simultaneously seen individuals of each species. Most censuses come from around feeders. But ornithologists are also collecting data that no bird arrived at the feeder at the time. “These data are also important for us and we ask the census to record them.” Empty “observations currently account for 1.6 percent of the census,” said Bird Watch Coordinator Alena Jechumtál Skálová.

People can also send census photos. Hundreds of them gathered. Those interested will find them at flickru CSO.

The fifth Bird Watch will take place from January 6 to 8 next year.
