SNTE and ISSSTE lead “unprecedented” meeting with teacher leaders

Mexico City. The general secretary of the National Union of Education Workers (SNTE), Alfonso Cepeda Salas, and the general director of the ISSSTE, Martí Batres Guadarrama, led an “unprecedented” meeting with the 54 teacher leaders from across the country, to identify and propose solutions to problems in medical services and social security.

Gathered behind closed doors at the Cultural Center of Contemporary Mexico of the teachers’ union, the general secretaries presented the challenges of each region. They agreed that the main situations to be resolved are the lack of general doctors and specialists, deficient, obsolete and insufficient facilities; lack of supplies and medicines; unpayable housing loans; as well as achieving decent pensions.

Cepeda Salas highlighted that the Issste serves more than 77 percent of education workers, so improving its services is a priority for the SNTE. He stressed that it is necessary to increase the budget for the Issste.

In addition, he proposed that the Delegation Councils be resumed between state representatives of the ISSSTE and the unions, to resolve in a timely manner the situations that require attention. He also asked that loans be stopped being granted through lotteries.

The national leader of the teaching profession insisted on the urgency of improving pensions and mentioned that one way could be the gradual increase of the UMA, since currently the limit is 10 for ISSSTE retirees, while for IMSS retirees it is 25 “We made the proposal with actuarial studies to increase one UMA per year and that the limit reaches 15.”

In the dialogue, the general director of the Issste recognized the commitment of teacher Alfonso Cepeda to the defense and expansion of workers’ rights, from the Union and now from the Senate of the Republic.
