Higher regions in the German state of Hesse experienced heavy snowfall on Monday, which caused major problems locally. Dozens of flights at Frankfurt’s busy airport were canceled due to snowfall.
Tree branches broke off above roads due to the sudden snow load and the road was blocked, resulting in numerous traffic jams.
In Wiesbaden, public transport was disrupted and several bus lines had to be canceled or shortened.
In and around the municipality of Kiedrich, about 40 kilometers west of Frankfurt, fire brigades and police had to take action to rescue approximately thirty snowbound cars. Not far away, about a hundred people in their cars or buses became completely snowbound in the Wallufbach valley (Wallufbeek), including schoolchildren in a school bus.
It will continue to snow in the region until at least Tuesday morning. Locally, up to 20 centimeters of snow can fall. Weather services warn that lower-lying areas in Hesse will also experience snow.
