Almost all of the Netherlands will experience snowfall and freezing of wet road sections on Sunday. The KNMI warns of traffic disruption and has issued a code yellow. Snowfall has caused nuisance in several European countries in recent days and on Saturday.
According to the KNMI, it is locally slippery due to freezing in the morning hours, snow poses this risk in the afternoon and evening. The code orange that applied to North and South Holland was lifted during the night from Saturday to Sunday.
An area of snow will move from southwest to northeast across the country from early afternoon. The snow will leave the Northeast early this evening into Monday. In many places between 1 and 3 centimeters of snow will fall, locally 5 centimeters may be reached.
“It will snow mainly in the Benelux on Sunday,” says meteorologist Johnny Willemsen of Weerplaza in conversation with NU.nl. In recent days, most of the winter showers were over Germany, Austria and Switzerland. “Some of them are also moving east, towards the Czech Republic, Poland and Belarus.”
Many European countries are struggling with winter weather problems
This means that a new group of countries can brace themselves for winter nuisance. KLM had to cancel some flights to Germany and the United Kingdom on Saturday because those countries are struggling with the snowfall. It is not clear whether Sunday’s flight schedule will also be adjusted. “It is not possible to say yet,” says a spokesperson.
It is going to snow for a long time in many places. The chance of a white landscape is greatest on Monday morning in Friesland, Overijssel, Drenthe and Groningen. Moreover, even more snow may fall on Monday. “Also elsewhere in Europe. In France, for example, it can snow in the mountains and in other regions it can rain a lot,” Willemsen explains.
Germany, Austria and Switzerland already struggled with the heavy snowfall on Saturday and in recent days.
