The upcoming “Snow White” film adaptation from Disney is not under a good star. Now leading actress Rachel Zegler commented on the controversy.
“Snow White” is the next live-action film adaptation of a Disney classic. There’s a lot at stake, and not just because it’s the remake of the all-time classic “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” from 1937, with which the studio founded its success: For five years, the next breakthrough box office hit in the field of live action has been awaited -Film adaptations awaited. The last time this happened was in 2019 with “The Lion King” by Jon Favreau, which was sold worldwide $1.6 billion could play. Neither “Maleficent: Forces of Darkness” nor “The Little Mermaid” could come close, even if they did $491 million respective $569 million are not the box office flops they are often made out to be. Other works such as “Mulan” and “Pinocchio” only received a release via Disney+.
There was already a lot of backlash from fans when it came to “The Little Mermaid,” probably due to Halle Bailey being cast in the lead role in a fairy tale adaptation. Now the whole thing is repeated in “Snow White”, because the leading role of the eponymous Disney princess in director Marc Webb’s version is played by the aspiring actress Rachel Zegler (“The Hunger Games – The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes”). As soon as the cast was announced, a wave of outrage broke out online because Snow White was white. “Skin as white as snow, lips as red as blood and hair as black as ebony,” many people tried to interpret based on the Brothers Grimm. Zegler as a Latina was miscast and it was just a “woke decision by Disney”.
On the other hand, if you look at the teaser trailer for “Snow White” without any reservations, then it just seems well-rounded and exactly how you would imagine such a live-action film adaptation:

For 23-year-old Zegler, this controversy isn’t even new; fans of Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” already complained that the daughter of a Colombian and an American of Polish origin was “too whitefor the role of Mary. Now she is a “White Latina,” as she describes herself (via Popsugar), others “not white enough“ for Snow White. And that despite the fact that it couldn’t be more visually appropriate.
The other construction site of the production, which is estimated to cost over 200 million US dollars, in the form of the missing dwarves, has now been cleaned up by Disney – albeit computer-animated. Now the anger of the online community is focused entirely on Zegler. But not only her origins, but also her statement that she wanted to portray Snow White as a fearless, fair, courageous and truthful young woman who not only dreams of love and is waiting to be rescued by a prince, made her a toxic target Group.
In a new portrait of Variety Zegler now commented on the misogynistic hate comments towards her.
“I have watched women being put down my entire life, my entire career. We will be watching this in the upcoming US presidential election. I’m afraid we’ll be seeing this for a very long time. Sometimes it feels like we are going backwards. At least that’s how it felt when all this happened.”
Her statement regarding Snow White’s nature in the film was also misinterpreted:
“It can be very annoying when things are taken out of context or jokes are not understood. The love story is very important. Many people have written that we [diese Handlung] wouldn’t be filming anymore – but we always planned to, it just wasn’t what we talked about that day.”
She consciously decided not to withdraw from social networks so as not to offer them satisfaction. She will not give the haters this power over her, says Zegler. “Snow White” opens in this country on March 20, 2025 in the cinemas.
