It’s a shame that Disney is “trying to do something new with a product that was already a big success,” he said.

David Hale Hand, son of animation director David Dodd Hand, chief director of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Bambi, criticized Disney and its approach to making remakes in an interview with The Telegraph.

The 91-year-old Hand was outraged at how the company plans to reimagine Snow White in a live-action film coming out in 2024. Earlier, the actors and creators of the remake hinted that the plot in it would not be a love story, and also said that the dwarves in this version would be replaced with “magical creatures”.

Hand, who worked at Disney as a designer in the 1990s, sees no need for change. In his opinion, people who consider the plot of the original 1937 film disrespectful towards women either misunderstood the cartoon or simply did not watch it. At the same time, the son of the animator noted that he does not see the need for remakes at all, especially those that Disney has been doing in recent years.

The new movie has a completely different idea, which I completely disagree with, and I’m sure that my dad, like Walt himself, would not agree with it. […]

The original film was not ethical when it was written and I totally disagree with the concept of the new film… But I understand that Disney is operating in that mode now.

I think it’s a disgrace to try to do something new with a piece that’s already been such a big success.

He accused modern Disney of disrespecting both its own classics and the people responsible for the original animated films.

I’m scared to think what they’ll do with the old films… Now they’re coming up with completely radical ideas. They change the plots, change the way the characters think to such an extent that these stories become completely different. They come up with something new and progressive for them, and I don’t like it at all.

To tell the truth, I find it offensive what they have done to some of the classic films. There is no respect for the work of Disney and my dad in this … I think that both he and Walt Disney would turn over in their graves. […]

You should not take the classics and try to rewrite it in your own image and likeness. Take something different, come up with new characters, but do not try to destroy the already beautiful works that have become classics.

The idea for a remake of Snow White was criticized even before filming began. In early 2022, before it was known that there would be “magical creatures” instead of dwarves in the film, actor Peter Dinklage accused Disney of being selectively progressive.

Rachel Zegler, who starred in the remake, later spoke out in defense of the new version of Snow White, arguing that the original story needed to be reworked for a modern audience.

Disney plans to release Snow White on March 22, 2024.

The actress agrees with the claims that this is a politically correct film. In her opinion, this is exactly what needs to be rethought.
